Districts of India

The administrative division of an Indian state or territory is known as a district. Districts are further divided into Sub-divisions and most of the districts have distinct headquarters.

The official members of a district include the Deputy Commissioner or District Magistrate or District Collector, an officer of the Indian Administrative Service who is responsible of revenue collection and administration; the Superintendent of Police or Deputy Commissioner of Police, an officer belonging to the Indian Police Service, in charge for maintaining law and order; the Deputy Conservator of Forests, an officer belonging to the Indian Forest Service, assigned with the supervision of the forests, environment and wildlife of the district.

Each of these official members is assisted by officers of the appropriate branches of state government.
